At Sumter County Middle School, Mrs. Lenora Satharla’s 7th grade science class is studying hydrogels. The students investigated the properties of hydrogels. They were given a sample of a hydrogel (sodium polyacrylamide) and were asked to make careful observations to record the changes in the hydrogel after placing it in water.   Then, students were asked to write an explanation that can be used to explain the changes that were observed.   After sharing and discussing their ideas, students read and researched information to learn more about the unique and useful properties of hydrogels. They discovered that water molecules move from outside of the hydrogel marble to the inside of the hydrogel marble by diffusion. Students participated in a classroom discussion about cellular concentration levels as Hypertonic, Hypotonic, and Isotonic. Additionally, the students discussed the differences between their environments and applied it to Hydrogels.
